Chinese American writers look for their spiritual sustenance from Chinese traditional culture in order to react against insults and seek their identities overseas. To meet the specific needs of the struggle, they selectively accept, transform and use Guan Yu' s image, thus triggering first variation of Guan Yu' s image in the United States. Americans' little knowledge of Chinese culture and prejudice against Chinese and Chinese culture, along with the Chinese American writers' intentional or unintentional misinterpretation of Guan Yu' s image, contributes to Americans' misinterpretation and distortion of Guan Yu' s image. And eventually in the movie My Name is Bruce Americans demonize Guan Yu' s image, which is the second variation on Guan Yu' s image in the United States.
