Günter Grass's novels show that violence erupts from hatred and prejudice against 'the others.' This kind of hatred and prejudice makes people, especially young people, susceptible to Fascist temptations and become enslaved. As a writer with moral conscience and a high sense of responsibility,Grass suggests that in order to avoid violence, one must be skeptical toward demands, use 'snail philosophy' against the 'great leap forward,' and think of the third possibility rather than binary opposition, because denial, prejudice and prosecution of 'the others' have been a prominent mind-set over the course of thousands of years in Western history.
