On December 7,1988,a strong earthquake struck the northern part of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic of USSR,resulting in great losses of life and property.This was the strongest shock in the Caucasus area in the last 80 years,arousing much concern from all over the world.Some informative data of this earthquake are compiled in this article, mainly including:focal parameters,earthquake hazards,social and economic effects,domes- tic and alien disaster relief and assistances,cause of the earthquake and disaster features, and some experience and lessons which merit attention as well.
