Based on a study of the close relationship between syndrome and clinical trial of Chinese herbal medicines, a general discussion has been made on the origin and development, characteristics,classification and standardization of the prescription to syndrome system. This standardization of prescription to syndrome system is believed to be the important point and basic principle for clinical trial of Chinese herbal medicines.
