Objective To investigate the protective effects of propofol on renal function by hemorrhagic shock and the mechanism in rats. Methods A model of hemorrhagic shock in New Zealand Rabbit was established. Thirty-two healthy rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 8 each) : control group, shock group, perfusion group and propofol (pretreatment)group. Blood samples were taken from the femoral vein for determination of levels of blood urea nitrogen(BUN), creatinine(Cr), lactic dehydrogenase(LDH) and lactic acid(LD). LD was detected in renal samples. Results All of the detection indexes were significantly higher in shock group and perfusion group than in control group (P〈0. 01). However, all of the detection indexes were significantly lower in propofol group than in shock group and perfusion group(P〈0. 01). There was no significant difference in all of the detection indexes between propofol group and control group(P〈0.05). Conclusions The renal dysfunction can be caused by hemorrhagic shock. Propofol administration can be of benefit to the renal function during hemorrhagic shock.
