In the perspective of archetypal criticism, Eudora Welty's "Death of a Traveling Salesman" (1936) depicted R. J. Bowman's last sales-trip as the archetypal journey of a modern hero in the formula of "Departure-Initiation-Return". Bowman's reflections on the "others" mirror his bleak life as well as the human being's awkward position in modern society. Welty presents the complexities of human life by using tools like metaphor and symbols to elicit the implicit subtext of the no- vel, and brought home to readers the very essence of human life.
