The CO2 geological storage demonstration project in the Otway Basin is the first carbon geosequestration which is integrated from source to sink in Australia. The international collaborated research program is also approved by the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum and the International Energy Agency. CO2CRC is in charge of the project. The project site is located in the Otway basin in the Victoria state. The research project commenced in 2003 and the whole research plan includes 2 stages. Over 65 000 tons of CO2 have successfully been injected into the Waarre C coarse sandstone Formation at a depth of 2 000 m below the land surface in stage 1, which lasted 5 years from 2004 to 2010. The mainly trapping mechanism is the structure closure. The stage 2 research is now going on, 10 000 tons of CO2 will be injected into the saline aquifer of the Paaratte Formation 1 500m below ther land surface. The aim is to examine residual gas trapping and dissolution trapping in the saline aquifer. "Huff-push" site field test of pre-injection of stage 2 is carried out.
