The family exists not simply as the creation of individuals and/or of the state; the family has a reality sui generis as a category of social existence within which the fullness of the biological and moral reality of individuals is realized. The family has a being which realizes a particular structure of the good and sustains the necessary conditions for central areas of human flourishing. The family helps to disclose not just facts of the matter but normative commitments as well. It is a cen tral category through which human relations and human goods are known. This essay argues for the importance of recog nizing the cardinal role and reality of the family, and for the importance of familybased heahhcare savings accounts for preserving family integrity, while also providing for sustainable longterm healthcare reform.
