The Fundamental Difference Hypothesis (FDH) ( Bley-Vroman, 1989,1990,2009 ) argues that adult foreign language learning is distinguished from child L1 acquisition. This article examines the arguments and concepts underlying FDH and their problems in argumentation, demonstrating their conceptual vagueness and lack of uniformity in criteria. Against FDH which denies the role of Universal Grammar in adult L2 acquisition, there is ample evidence that adult L2 acquisition is not essentially different from L1 acquisition and that the difference between L1 and L2 in its ultimate state is only quantitative, but not qualitative in nature.
