Objective To investigate factors associated with the retention of men who have sex with men(MSM) in an HIV prospective cohort study.Method From March to October of 2009,HIV negative MSM were recruited into a prospective cohort study by using classified snowball sampling. The first follow-up period began in March of 2010 and the second in September of 2010.Mobile phone and Internet based communication tools were used as the main contacting methods.Meanwhile, detailed information about MSM who were lost to follow-up was recorded during the contact. The socio-demographic characteristics and behavior which might affect the retention were analyzed.Result A total of 453 MSM were successfully recruited at the baseline,of whom 299 were followed up at least once, and the follow up rate was 66.0%.In both single factor and multiple logistic regression analysis, the factors including age over 25 years, living locally for more than 1 year, receiving HIV test in the past one year, having unprotected anal intercourse with men during the past six months, were found to be associated with high retention rate(P0.05).Conclusion It is harder to retain MSM in the cohort study who are younger, living locally for less than one year, receiving no HIV test in the past one year, and having unprotected anal intercourse with men in the past 6 months, and all these factors should be given serious attention during the MSM cohort study.
