In the presence of catalytic amount of sulphuric acid, alkenes could be convertedregioselectively into either the corresponding vicinal hydroxy acetates or vicinal diols in goodyields by use of sodium perborate-acetic anhydride as the oxidant. An oxidation mechanismvia boric intermediate is suggested.
