In more than 140 years since the Dominion of Canada was established, the Canadianmainstream society's attitude towards its native people has changed little by little—the govern-ment's earlier policy of assimilation has been gradually replaced by a policy of multiculturalism, which claims to respect and protect every ethnic group in Canada.Meanwhile the native people'sown consciousness has also been awakened and they are searching for and re-establishing theirown ethnic identities through literary creations.Simultaneously, the native literatures'progresshas helped to popularize some progressive concepts like multiculturalism and social harmony in thewhole Canada. This thesis attempts to explore and analyze,in the light of postcolonial criticism, the above mentioned interactive social progress from two perspectives:first, the mainstream whitewriters'literary creations and second, the aboriginal writers'own literary writings. The changingestimation of"Confederation Poet"D.C.Scott,both as a poet and as an official, provides anexample for the first perspective.Scott's poems concerning Indian people had once brought himhigh reputation, but have been criticized,in the light of postcolonial criticism,as revealing hiscolonial way of thinking. On the other hand, the native writers'literary writings are illustratedwith two prize-winning works—The Rez Sisters by Indian playwright T.Highway and The Fast Runner, the first film directed and produced solely by the Inuit personals—as examples to demon-strate the native writers'efforts to maintain their own ethnic identities and cultural heritages, andconcurrently, their writings'impacts over the mainstream society.
