European scholars began to study Chinese culture long time ago. In 1585, the Description of the Empire of China written by Jean Du Halde was published in Rome. In 1735, Juan Gonzalez De Mendoza’s History of the Great and Mighty Kingdom of China and the Situation There of was published in Paris. Today, an encyclopedia on studies of sinology has been compiled and released by Oriental Literature Press under the Russian Academy of Science, which is entitled "An Encyclopedia of Chinese Culture".
