２０ 世纪，在全世界工业高速发展、物质财富大量累积的同时，森林遭到了空前的破坏，森林面积急剧下降。例如，１９５０ 年，全世界森林面积（３７．３８ 亿ｈｍ ２）占大陆面积的１／４，估计２０００年只占１／６（２４．９２亿ｈｍ ２）。过去５０年中，全球森林覆盖率由２５％ 下降到１７％ ；共消失森林１２．４６ 亿ｈｍ ２，平均每年消失２ ２４９ｈｍ ２，即每分钟消失４７．４ｈｍ ２。按照这个速度，地球上的森林将在２１ 世纪内，被消灭干净，人类将因失去生存环境而无法生存下去。森林（包括竹林）是地球上生态环境的卫士，应得到全世界国家和人民的保护。展望２１ 世纪，全世界森林资源必须实行可持续发展的方针，人们将十分重视发展和保护森林，竹业也将会欣欣向荣的发展起来。预计全世界竹林面积比２０ 世纪扩大２～３倍，竹材产量将提高２．５～３．５ 倍。
With the world industry rocketing,and material wealth stocking in the 20 th centuary,the forest has been unprecedentedly distroyed,and consequently forest area is sharply down. For example,in 1950,the world forest area is 3.738 billion hm 2,or 1/4 of the world total terrestrial area,but it is estimated to account for 1/6 of that by the end of 2000,or 2.492 billion hm 2. In the past 50 years,the global forest coverage has been dropped from 25% to 17% with a forest of 1.246 billion hm 2 depleting,that is,depleting at a rate of 24,920,000 hm 2 per year,or 474,100hm 2 per minute. If forest would be destroyed like this rate,the forest on the earth would come to zero by the end of 21 th century,the human being would no longer survive on the earth due to lossing its living environments. Forest,including bamboo forest is a guarder for global ecological environments,and should deserve high protection of the world and the people. Looking forward the sustainable development policy which will be implemented in the worldwide forest resource manangement in the coming 21 th centuary,the people will pay a very high attention to development and protection of forest,as a result,bamboo sector will be boomed accordingly. As compared with 20 th centuary,it is predicted that world bamboo forest area will be up by 2～3 times,bamboo timber yield by 2.5～3.5 times,and much higher attention will be given to its ecological benifits.
