Inner discontinuity, conflicting urban scales and informal spaces of spontaneous lifecreate an atmosphere of spatial diversity and lively characteristic of contemporary Berlin. Thedominating background to this condition is the homgeneous city of the 19th century, theoriginal face of Berlin. World-war Ⅱ and the politically forced division of the urban body overseveral decades had a deep impact on the original urban texture, post-war architectural activities on both sides of the Wall enhanced this destructive impact and resulted in dramatic ruptures in the city's urban texture. The spacial consequence of these interventions is marked bythe presence of voids: voids of absence, confrontattion and raw spacial transitions. Berlin'spast and present are found in these spaces. Against the background of the historical city a dialectic was evolved, which is of presence and absence, or of existence and non-existence. Inthese spaces of apparent emptiness, Berlin's most inner truth is reflected.
