Thin carbon stripping foils are routinely used in charged particle accelerators to strip electrons from the accelerated ions. At CSRm ring in Lanzhou, thin carbon foil with 1μg/cm2 or even less is also possibly used as an internal target. Under bombardment with energetic particle beams, the foils undergo radiation damage and subsequently shrink leading to the mechanical break. This is the main limitation for the long time operation of the foil.
