The foot nails, which were installed recently on a high-voltage power iron tower, were broken unexpectedly as the maintenance persons were climbing the iron tower. The failure analyses of the foot nails rupture were conducted by means of the chemical composition, mechanical properties, macrostructure, metallographic, and EDS.The results show that the failure was not caused by their material composition and machining, but resulted from the excessive preload.During the installation of the foot nails, the preload was applied to the screw bolts of the foot nails and caused the pre-crack occurring in the screw thread of the foot nails. In addition, the lower temperature during installation also increased the possibility of the brittle fracture. The results suggest that the inspection of nail material itself only in investigating the rupture of the foot nails is not sufficient.Much attention and inspection should be paid to the installation operation.
