From the perspective of culture shock, this thesis analyzes an ordinary American journalist′s puzzles and confusions, which are presented in his essay Hiroshima-the"Liveliest" City in Japan. The American people stick to human equality while the Japanese people admire hierarchical order;the Americans hold a negative attitude towards suicide while the Japanese hold a positive attitude towards suicide. It is argued that such huge differences between two na-tions′culture leads to an ordinary American′s misunderstanding about and prejudice against Japanese culture.
