Excitatory amino acids (EAAs) are widely distributed in the central nervous system, and involved in a variety of physiological processes such as learning, memory and nociception.Overactivation of EAAs receptors may initiate a cascade of cellular events, which produce neuronal injury and death.Several neurodegenerative syndromes such as Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, amyotropic lateral sclerosis have been linked to excitotoxicity of EAAs.The recent studies have demonstrated that excessive activation of EAAs receptors can result in intracellular Ca 2+ overload that ultimately leads to neuronal death.
