Copolymers of styrene(St) and butyl methacrylate(BMA) were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization using a bifunctional initiator bis(chloroethyl)benzene. The molecular weights of the polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography. The block copolymers of BMA and St with predicted molecular weight (11047104) and narrow molecular weight distribution (1218) were obtained. The random copolymer compositions were determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy and the reactivity ratios were evaluated by the extended KelenTudos method to be rSt=081, rBMA=016. St was found to be more reactive than BMA in atom transfer radical copolymerization.
