The use of mould inhibitors is an important consideration in feed industry particularly where the ambient temperature and air humidity are high.Mould inhibitors are short chain organic acids,including propionic, acetic,formic,fumaric,citric marlic acids,either in free acid form or salts.The modes of actions of fine acid and salts as mould inhibitors are discussed. The mould inhibition efficacy of a salt replies on its transfomation into its undissociated fine acid, and this process is regulated by pH and availability of the water. Factors affecting the efficacy of mould inhibition in feed and feed ingredients are discussed. Mould inhibitor related factors include: types of acid, degree of dissociation. water solubility, volatility, reactivity, particle size, flow property and manufacturing technology.Feed related factors include:composition. particle sizes,water content(water activity)in relation of air relative humidity,and physical form of feed.Based on the information provided,the user is urged to consider the different factors to enable them to choose appropriate mould inhibitors,dosages and other measures to fit their particular situations.
