摘要
This article focuses on the identification and analysis of the Elephant taming images on the Han pictorial carved-stones.The author argues that the images of elephant taming, which initially occurred in the Buddhism documents, was immediately merged with local religions including the Taoism and Worship of Royal Lady of the West when it was introduced into Central China during the Late Western Han and the Early Eastern Han.The appearance of elephant taming in the mortuary contexts indicates that Buddhism had strong ideological influences upon the local nobles and landlords and it had become part of civilian religion at that time.
