Cu, Zn-superoxide dismutase (Cu, Zn-SOD) contents in the tissues of human hepatocellular carcinoma, the corresponding adjacent tumor-free liver and the normal liver were studied. Cu, Zn-SOD content in the tumor tissue was lower than that in the corresponding adjacent tumor-free tissue and the normal liver tissue. Furthormore, Cu, Zn-SOD content in poorly differentiaed liver cancer tissue was lower than that in well differentiated liver cancer tissue. This study indicated that decreased Cu, Zn-SOD content in the corresponding adjacent tumor-free tissue, especially in the cirrhotic liver tissue, may be responsible for the malignant change of normal liver cells. The poorly differentiated liver cancer cells may have a negative regulation which can control the multiplication and differentiation of liver cancer cells.
