This paper reports the geologic and mineralogic characters of the black fluorite is discovered in the Huayuan lead zinc deposit once again. The ore deposit is one of the large Mississippi Valley Type lead zinc deposits discovered in Western Hunan. It occurrs in the platform marginal algal limestone and oolite limestone in the middle upper part of the Lower Cambrian Qingxudong Formation. Fluorite is one of the important companion minerals in ores, showing grey black early and light purple - colourless late. The black fluorite is always associated with sparry calcite and barite, some times with sphalerite, and has lumpy, net veined or disseminated fabric. In space, the black fluorite occurs in the axial region of a little anticline, and is overlapped with the orebady, but frequently found in the margin or top of the orebed. The black fluorite was mistaken for bitumen. The detailed studies, including optic character under a microscope, X ray powder analysis, REE analysis by INAA, infrared spectroscopic analysis, electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESRS), and chemical analysis of organic carbon, pyrolysis of source rocks (PY), pyrolytic gas chromatographic analysis (PY GC), scanning electrophotomicrograph (SEM) etc., show that the black mineral is the fluorite containing bitumen. The bitumen entered into the fluorite as a lot of very small organic gas inclusions during the crystalization process, then, the organic matterevolved into solid hydrocarbon adhering to the inclusion wells, and at last causes change in colour of the fluorite. The geologic and mineralogic characters of the black fluorite also suggest that the organic matter participated the mineralization of the Huayuan lead zinc deposit.
