This paper studies the formation of central markets which is a key question of spatial concentration in wholesale trade area, and analyzes the changes of market trade share with the decline of transportation costs by building a "center-periphery" model which contains two markets and two industrial clusters in two different regions. The conclusion is that transportation cost is only a necessary condition for the formation of a central market, while the transaction efficiency is the sufficient condition for a market to become a central market. If a central market has acquired the support from powerful local industrial clusters, it will develop into an origin-of-production central market; otherwise, it will develop into a hub-type central market.
