It was much probably that sweet potato was introduced into Sichuan province from the land route of Burma and Yunnan during the late Ming dynasty. In the mid - late Qing dynasty, this kind of crop had spread widely from more channels as Yunnan, Guizhou, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangdong, etc. to many places of this province, especially to the hilly land and low mountain areas. The causes lay in the relatively good conditions of nature and communications and the fast increasing population, particularly the farmers scientific recognition of sweet potato and their systematic knowledge of its production technology. In the Qing dynasty, sweet potato promoted Sichuan land reclamation and utili- zation, raised the grain production level, gave rise to the change of planting and food structures, strengthened the ability to relieve disasters and enriched the local agriculture; besides, it pushed forward husbandry development, raised the provision of commodity grain, helped soil maintenance and set up some planting technological bases for the coming generations. In addition, some kinds of sweet potato also spread from Sichuan to other provinces. Briefly speaking, its influence was many-sided and mainly positive.
