A first requirement in selection of formulation components is to understand the habits of the target population.Knowledge of the type of clothes,method of washing,temperature and chemical composition of the water used,and the chemical and physical nature of the soils and stains to be removed are needed.This paper describes the science underlying some of the essential cleaning functions and demonstrates some of the issuse which must be tackled in turning the set of cleaning functions into an excellent product,including the selection of appropriate evaluation methods.
