Costimulatory signal can not only assist T cell activation but also downregulate immune response through the negative signal programmed death-1(PD-1) and its ligands,PD-L1(also B7-H1) and PD-L2(also B7-DC) to regulate the extent and duration of response. The typical negative costimulatory signal pathway is involved in the mechanisms of trans-and auto-immune diseases, tumor immune evasion and chronic viral infection for example AIDS.This paper reviews the roles of PD-1 and its ligands in the development and treatment of HIV infection.
