The new Nanjing University Xianlin Campus Student Center represents Cohen's geometrical interpretation of a new type of centrality and finality for central buildings. The author argues that the dynamic causality between two opposing paradigmatic forms represents a new type of centrality that overcomes the two prevailing associations of architectural centrality. It neither symbolizes absolute governmental authority nor the tendency to establish difference by means of random and strange sculptural form.Rather, its attenuation of formal proportions and of sequences through the building gives new meaning to the idea of permanence and finality.By means of prolonged promenades,it becomes a social experience. The use of economically based local construction techniques contributes a vernacular sensibility to this redefinition of monumentality.
