To implement monitoring and assessment of national forest biomass, it is becoming the trend to develop generalized single-tree biomass models suitable for large-scale forest biomass estimation. The sample collection approach for modeling of single-tree biomass equations was studied in this paper. Firstly, based on the review of related literatures, the methods of sample collection in field and dry-weight measurement in laboratory were summarized. Secondly, considering the situation being applied all over the country, the sample collection approach was presented: the stem being weighted by three (lower, middle, and upper) sections, and 2 disks being selected from the trunk on each point of 1/10, 3.5/10, 7/10 tree height for moisture content measurement; the crown being weighted by three (lower, middle, and upper) layers, and 3 standard branches being selected in each layers to determine the leafless branch/foliage ratio, and sub-samples being selected from the standard branches (not including foliage) in each of the three layers and from the foliage of all three layers for moisture content measurement; the roots being excavated wholly and weighted, then sub-samples being selected from stump, coarse root (≥10 mm), and fine root (〈10 mm) respectively. Finally, the method of data processing and computation was provided. The approach was recommended to be technical guidelines for the sample collection for modeling of generalized single-tree biomass equations in China.
