The classification of the English/r/,/l/and/h/into consonants has been questioned, and yet their status has not been decided. Phoneticians both at home and abroad have argued over their manners and places of articulation and their distinctive features. The author challenges some relevant assumptions and definitions of these sounds. A further study of these segments convinces the author that they are approximants, which share some similarities with semi -vowels, that is, they are not true consonants. Therefore, they should be regarded as intermediates, something between consonants and vowels, and their distinctive features can be notated as ( + consonantal/vocalic).
