Utilising 3D measuring methods and state-of-the-art computer technology, as well as scientifically calculated data, computer animations are created to produce 3D visualisations that communicate complex interrelatedness in a clear and understandable way. The majority of sculptures from the tomb of the First Chinese Emperor Qin Shihuang excavated so far, have only sparse remnants of colouring left or none at all. The figurative sculptures predominantly show merely the brown and grey shades of terracotta. A large part of the original polyehromy has been Inst. Only a few sculptures today still display large polychrome surfaces. This paper aims to demonstrate the ability of virtual 3D models to visualise the exquisitely colourful original appearance of the Clay Warriors in a virtual reconstruction. The sculpture of a general (T9:l) and a kneeling archer (T21G 18-03) of the Terracotta Army were used for the visualisation. Contemporary colouring of the sculptures was documented and then used as a starting point for the colour reconstruction. The surface of the Terracotta Warriors was digitalised using 3D scanners. Information from those models served as the base for the recreation of original surfaces. Digital photos were used to document the current condition of the sculptures and with these photos the texturing of the 3D models was made. The colour reconstruction and virtual finishing was done using a 3D painting software and built up on the textures. Digital model processing enables simulations and visualisations of the most divergent colnurs and conditions. This project was undertaken to demonstrate the original resplendent appearance of the Terraeona Warriors, using a few selected sculptures as examples. Through a computer model, the polychrome scheme was to be recreated on virtual three-dimensional models of the warriors in order to give a vivid impression of the original colorfulness of the Terracotta Army.
