The fact of Shanghai circuit intendant's appeal to the British consulate for the ban of Shanghai Post in 1873 is generally not found in records of Shanghai newspapers history, the cause of which can be attributed to its carrying of articles of political taboos concerning local officials in Shanghai and Zhejiang. The involvement of Shanghai Post,a commercial newspaper in politics can be viewed as their efforts to establish relationship with the government and to extend the influence of the newspaper. The different attitudes of newspaper editors and government officials towards the ban of Shanghai Post indicate contrasting views on modern journalism.Influenced by western ideas, journalists' views on media begin to change.
