People can conclude how one nation views another nation generally in certain period by studying the works in one nation about another nation in the period.Based on the theory of comparative literature,by analysis of the image of China in the works by western thinkers, missionaries and writers from 19th century to 1920s and 1930s,it can be seen that effected by superiority of great-power chauvinism, the need of missionary work and commercial interests,China was painted dreadful and terrifying shades and became the "other" in absence.
