摘要
纳撒尼尔.霍桑被认为是美国文学史上最伟大的小说家之一,在其代表作《红字》中他娴熟的运用了象征手法,不仅赋予小说各种事物和现象更深层次的意义,也给小说的四个主人公的名字赋予了极其丰富的内涵。本文将着重对小说中Hester Prynne,Arthur Dimmesdale,Roger Chillingworth和Pearl这四个主要人物名字的象征含义予以分析解读。
Nathaniel Hawthorne is considered one of the. greatest novelists in the history of American literature. In his masterpiece The Scarlet Letter he skillfully used symbolism, which not only gives the various things and phenomena a deeper evel of meaning, but also gives an extremely rich connotation to the four main characters＇ names. This paper will focus on the names of Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Roger Chillingworth and Pearl, trying to analyze and interpret the symbolism.
