The Father, August Strindberg' s first naturalistic play, is written under Darwin' s influence of "The Law of the Fittest. " Traditionally, people' s focus of interest of the play is its "misogyny" and they often attribute it to the playwright' s personal experience and his view of women. This thesis, guided by the theories of gender studies, attempts to argue that "misogyny" in the play is precisely an exposure of male uncertainty and masculinity crisis. The Captain' s derision, distortion and degradation of women only let off his self-repression and self-deniak. In the face of a stronger female antagonist, his opposition and struggle prove to be futile, his death being a final evidence of his complete failure.
