Through an introduction of the 'Octopus', a HongKong's contactless Smartcard, Which was first used in the September of 1997, the author analyses the system configuration, the operational issues, and comes to the conclusion that this new system is very convenient for transportation charges, and will be widely applied in railway, bus, ferry and LRT systems. In fact, by the end of 1997, the 'Octopus' had been used to carry out over 2.5 million transactions per day.
