The phase inconsistency or path dependence is a main problem encountered when phase unwrapping techniques are applied. To overcome this difficulty, most of the phase unwrapping algorithms having been developed unwrap around the phase inconsistencies rather than through them. This paper addresses a new phase unwrapping algorithm based on the Poisson's equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The procedure can suppress the propagation of the errors and then unwraps through the phase inconsistencies. Computer simulation results indicate that the algorithm works well, as is theoretically predicted, and can limit the propagation of the errors to small areas near the inconsistencies.
