The leach residue of nepheline is treated with nitric acid to produce aluminium nitrate, the latter was added in ammonia liquor to produce aluminium hydroxide and ammonium nitrate. Aluminium hydroxide is then burned out in a gas suspension furnace to give sand-like A12O3.
