摘要
本文通过对多位学者的主观与客观情态观的综合研究,对英语情态动词客观认识情态的主观性进行了探讨。文章认为:在认识、道义与动力情态之间以及情态动词与(无情态动词)直陈语气陈述句之间存在主观性程度差异,共同构成了一个错综复杂的主观性渐变连续统。现实与非现实概念使得区分情态句与非情态句具有可行性。
Through a comprehensive survey of several scholars＇ viewpoints on subjective and objective modality, the paper discusses the subjectivity of objective epistemie modality expressed by English modals. It argues that there is a difference in the degree of subjectivity between epistemic, deontie and dynamic modalities as well as between the subjectivity of the declarative sentence with a modal verb and the indicative declarative sentence （ marked by the absence of a modal verb）, and they together constitute a complex cline of subjectivity. The paper also argues that the concept of realis vs. irrealis makes it possible to distinguish a modal sentence from a non-modal one.
