This paper reports on an empirical study of incidental vocabulary acquisition (IVA) in natural reading. Natural reading refers to reading for meaning or for fun, such as reading novels and newspapers, during or after which the reader does not normally do any exercises like answering multiple choice comprehension questions. In the study, four participants read three simplified world-known novels and were tested on their knowledge of 118 target words which appear in the novels. The results show that the participants incidentally acquired knowledge of certain components of the target words and the acquisition rate of spelling knowledge was 21.6% and that of word meaning 15.5%. The main function of natural reading in IVA is to provide the opportunity of encountering new words in context and help to develop partial knowledge of them. This process interacts with noticing, application, and comprehension need to facilitate full mastery of various component types of word knowledge.
