Yves Bonnefoy is a key poet, translator and essayist in post-war French literature. His poetry is remarkable for its tranquil spiritual integrity,a fusion of symbolism and surrealism, and a distinctive individual style. This essay demonstrates how the simplicity of his vocabulary and the starkness of his expression are combined with a deeply-ingrained sensuality and a longing for a 'presence',which comes to define human experience and condemn Abstract concepts by examining the meaning of spoken and written words. He is also an important translator, most notably of Shakespeare and of other works on art and art history.A winner of many awards including the Franz Kafka Prize in 2007,he is regularly mentioned among the prime favorites for the Nobel Prize.
