Background and objective Osteosarcoma is a high-malignant bone tumor and is the most frequent malignant bone tumor in children and adolescents. Significant proportions of the patient eventually develop pulmonary metastases and succumb to their disease even after conventional multi-agent chemotherapy and surgical excision. Several solid tumors display enhanced expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and recently MMP- inhibitors have entered clinical trials. Bisphosphonate (BPs) have a profound effect on bone resorption and are widely used in treatment of osteoclast-mediated bone diseases and have been known to inhibit tumor growth and metastasis in some tumors such as breast cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and prostate cancer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the bisphosphonate on osteosarcoma cell invasion.
