"五四"对近代中国社会转型和民族主义的建构来说都是一个特殊的阶段。文化的"五四"对民族主义的文化建构凸显了中国社会和思想文化的现代性;政治的"五四"对民族主义的政治建构彰显了中国的政治转型;新文学、白话文运动和"统一国语"形塑了民族主义意识形态的现代基础;而"印刷资本主义"、城市化和新式教育的发展则提供了民族主义建构的现代条件。
The May Fourth Movement was a special period of time for both the social transformation and nationalist construction in modern China. Under the impact in various fields of the May Fourth Movement, the nationalist cultural construction brought into bold relief the modernity of Chinese society, thought and culture ; the nationalist political construction threw light on the political transformation in China; and the modern literature, the Vernacular Movement and the ＂unified Mandarin Chinese＂ molded the modern foundation of nationalist ideology; and the development of ＂print capitalism,＂ urbanization and new education provided modern conditions for the nationalist construction.
