In translating novels, the translator's evaluation and judgment often influence his/her interpretation of the source text and the character, which offers us effective tools for analyzing the character depiction effect in translations. A study of the translations of Gone with the Wind shows that shifts of appraisal meaning result in different depiction effects of the heroine, which is the result of translator - author dialogic communication as well as social contextual factors like reader's expectation and ideology.
