Many of John Ruskin? s works have touched upon ecological issues. These works can be looked upon as his participation in the context of the 19th century cultural criticism. Ruskin' s ecological concern is rooted in his overall thinking on Culture, which implies a "modem anxiety" over the rapid transition from agricultural civilization to industrial civilization that the 19th century Britain witnessed. Like Thomas Carlyle and Matthew Arnold, Ruskin directed the spearhead of his criticism at the "anti-cultural" phenomenon of the mechanical progress driven by the Industrial Revolution, which posed a great threat to not only the natural environment, but also the labour environment. Behind Ruskin' s anxiety is his aspiration for the integrity and harmony of human relationships to society and Nature as a whole.
