Based on McCarty′s half reactions theory, some new stoichiometric equations are proposed for biological nitrification and denitrification. The stoichiometric relationships between COD/NO3_N, COD/NO2_N, yield coefficients (Yc and YN) and synthesized fraction of electron donors (carbohydrates, fatty acids and organic acids, alcohols, and inorganic electron donors, etc.) of biological denitrification are developed and the relationships between COD/N ratios and yield coefficients are established, respectively. The stoichiometric relationships between oxygen/ammonia nitrogen ratios (OD/NH3_NNO3_N and OD/NH3_NNO2_N), yield coefficients and the synthesized fraction of electron donor, as well as the relationships between oxygen/nitrogen ratios and the yield coefficients of biological nitrification are also developed. The theoretical ranges of all the parameters mentioned above are pointed out. The stoichiometric relationship and the empirical relationship between COD/NO3_N and Yc is discussed.
