Abstract During the Eighth-Five Year Plan period. the temporal-spatial multiple characteristics ofclimatic change.atmospheric oscillation and Antarctic synoptic-climatic regional changes werestudied by Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences with the mathematic diagnostic methodssuch as cluster analysis. regression.multispectrum and rernote correlation etc. Some newknowledge about the synopticclimatic characteristics and their changes in Antarctic region hasbeen gained. Based on the characteristics of Antarctic climatic environment.the ice-air coupledclimatic model etc.have been built and improved. Furthermore, the mechanisms of the effect ofAntarctic large scale topography and cold source on general circulation and global climate changehave been studied. Also.a study has been made on the effects of Antarctic weather and ice-sea onthe East Asia monsoon characteristics and the changes of weather and climate associated with thecatastrouhic events in China.
