白银地区火山—沉积岩系为大陆裂谷火山作用的产物。震旦系火山喷发旋回划分为13个喷发韵律和3个喷发亚旋回,成岩环境为半深海相沉积环境,具古陆壳陆内初始裂谷阶段背景;寒武系火山喷发旋回划分为13个喷发韵律和两个喷发亚旋回,黑茨沟组的成岩环境为半深海相沉积环境,是继震旦纪白银岩群后陆壳进一步拉张裂解的产物,代表了裂谷的发展阶段,香毛山组具海底扩张阶段的大陆边缘裂谷沉积背景。
