The Annual Academic Conference of the Axchitectural Society of China for 1997 was held December 1-3 of the same year in Shanghai. Ye Rutang, ASC president and Vice-Minister of Construction, Chen Weibang, chief planner of the Ministry of Construction, Ma Tinggui, president of China State Construction and Engineering Corporation and relevant officials from the municipal government of Shanghai attended to deliver their congratulations.Urban design has always been a heat sphere of research for urban planning, construction, gardening and fine arts studies. With the quickening of China’s reform and urbanization process, it has become a matter of major importance to search for an urban design system that meets China’s national characteristics and to create an optimal public space for the residents. 350 experts from all parts of the country participated in discussions on a wide range of subjects related to urban public space. They also site visited some well-known projects in Shanghai.The conference was run by ASC and The Urban Planning Association of China, with ASC Vice-President Zheng Shiting and Secretary General Don Yide presiding. A total of 151 papers were received.
